DO Tarragona

Tarragona located in Catalunya on the northeast cost of Spain. For centuries this areas has been renowned for sweet red wines. Today its full-bodied aromatic whites, which make up nearly three-quarters of production, and younger red wines are finding their way on to the market. Tarragon DO was created in 1947, making it one of the oldest in Spain. Only a few still produce the traditional wines: Rancios (rancid) wines are left out in the sun in glass demijohns and are then aged for at least four years in oak barrels Tarragona Clásico (Classic Tarragona) is made with 100% very ripe Tempranillo grapes, and is fermented until it attains a maximum of 17% alcohol. It is then aged for twelve years in oak . Sweet dessert wine is aged for five to ten years in vats, oak casks or in the bottle.

Grape Varieties
The three authorized white varieties are:: Chardonnay, Garnacha blanca, Moscatel , Moscatel de Alejandría, Parellada, Sauvignon blanco, Malvasía, Macabeo, Xarel·lo The Red varieties are: Cabernet sauvignon, Garnacha, Merlot, Monastrell, Pinot Noir, Mazuela, Sumoll, Syrah, Tempranillo.
