DO Catalunya

Over 2,000 years of wine producing have endowed Catalunya with a wide range of traditional Catalonian varieties. The DO Catalunya is an umbrella DO covering a large area in Catalonia. There are smaller DOs within the area.


Grape Varieties
White Grape Varieties:
The Macabeu or Viura, the Xarello - also known as Cartoixà or Pansal or Pansa Blanca - and the Parellada or Montonenc or Montònega are all indigenous Catalan varieties. The resulting wines are refined, with an abundance of fruit, slightly acidic. These wines are young, light and very fruity.
Red Grape Varieties :
Ull de Llebre, Samsó or Crusilló or Mazuela, Garnatxa negra or Lladoner and Peluda, and Monastrell or Morastell or Garrut are predominant among the indigenous or traditional Catalan varieties. These are varieties are powerful in both body and color, these wines have a characteristically clear and concentrated aroma, well-balanced and with a lingering aftertaste. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir are all foreign varieties that have acclimatised perfectly to Catalunya, possessing a high intensity of color very powerful in both color and body, rounded in the mouth, with a lingering aftertaste and the characteristic aromas of ripe fruits
