becoming a pioneer Denomination of Origin in Spain, having been recognized as a denomination in 1932.
Alicante is located on the east coast of northern Spain in the province of Valencia. The Mediterranean
climate and dry calcium laden earth create ideal conditions for the grapes authorized for this DO.
Grape Varieties
Grape Varieties:
White Chardonnay, Macabeo, Meseguera, Moscatel de Alejandría, Sauvignon blanc, Planta Fina y Verdil.
Red: Garnacha Tinta, Garnacha Tintorera, Monastrell, Tempranillo, Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir y Shiraz.
The Monastrell variety of red grape is traditional of the area. A strong variety for red wine with a very thick skin that produces wines with lots of tannins. The variety is also known as Mourvèdre. In the wines one can taste and smell blackberries, spices, pepper and also leather and more earthy tones.
